I know this topic had its own thread once but for the life of me I can't find it. I'm having my two skis detailed by someone this year, I just don't have the time and patients for it. Do most people trailer with or without covers? I know it would be nice to have them protected but does the wind and the cover cause wear on the paint/wax?

Thanks,
Ed

Correct do not tow the skis with a cover it will scratch the paint/gelcoat.

I have towed w covers for years, never a scratch.

I think its better to keep covers on as it protects from road debris.

FWIW Im talking about a 200-300 mile trip, the .5 to the local lake goes uncovered.

I don't tow with the cover on. It's just personal preference, but highly debated....

I drive without the cover and never had an issue. And any road debris will be hitting the bottom of the hull which is not covered. Also keeps the life of your cover lasting longer.

I tow with the cover if I am going far, I lay a flannel sheet on first then the cover , I attach the cover at 4 points and wrap a cable lock around it to keep it secure if I stop some where ,, the best thin about the cover is you don't have that feeling your going to lose a seat or something8-[

just came across this thread....I personally tow long distances with a cover as well. I ordered JetTribe covers, they are heavy duty, and come with tie down straps that wrap underneath the ski , and then two straps on the back that attach to the trailer..great warranty on the covers too..they are pricey but better than the SeaDoo covers, which I think were not that heavy duty, and also I had mold build up problems on the inside of them. I have had the jetTribe covers for a year and havent had any mold problems

I always tow with covers. I have the OEM Yamaha covers on all my skis.

I also have so much wax on them that they don't ever get scratches.

See the reflection? Not bad a 94 ski is it.

Also a pic of the one cover I use.

I have an rxp and the seadoo cover. I used the cover when I picked up my ski, I traveled about 1000 miles with the cover on and as a result the ends of my mirrors no longer have paint on them:-x

Never tow with a cover! Get one these! My skis do not have any damage whatsoever using this.

Well, I got an original Seadoo cover for my brand new RXT IS that I bought last year. I've never towed it with the cover on. I used it for short-term (a few days) and long term (winter months) storage and it worked great.

Last week, I towed it for the first time with the cover on, and I think I will do that from now on if I'm towing long distance. The Seadoo cover is HIGH QUALITY and it has a thin layer of cotton on the inside where it touches the Seadoo so that it does not rub the material against the plastics (mostly mirrors). I think they made it like that so you can tow with it without worrying about wearing off the paint because of wind, etc.

So my opinion is that if you have a nice quality cover that protects your machine underneath OR if you put a towel over the vital parts (shiny plastics), then it is probably a good idea to cover it from rock chips, road grime, bird crap, etc.

One other thing regarding the wind... These custom made covers are TIGHT as hell! :D I was worried about the wind blowing it off, but there's NO CHANCE, if you fasten it down underneath the bumper rails, that it will ever fly off!

My Gelcoat was marred when i towed with the cover on... in short i dont tow it with the cover on.. unless i'm in the desert during a sandstorm.
