What would cause rings to get "burnt" and stick?

I have a 1999 900 STX, it had 40 psi in the front cylinder so i pulled the cylinder. The piston and rings look in great shape, other than the fact that the rings were stuck, and were "burnt" in spots that caused the sticking. Why? How should i go about fixing this?

    Thanks

I would suspect a lower quality oil caused the rings to stick. The rings need contact with the cylinder wall to dissipate heat, so if they were sticking, they may have overheated.

Come to find out, the previous owner was using oil from Walmart. What would be a good oil to use? Its a 1999 stx 900.
