Thread: aftermarket computer?

I'm new to this whole PWC thing, but I gave up my car hobby so I could get into this.
I'm wondering why I haven't seen anyone talking about using aftermarket computers for engine management? That coupled with a wideband setup would yield awsome results. In the car world there is a DIY computer system called megasquirt. The newest one would cost under 500 and you would have complete control over the engine. Why not go this route instead of the RR $1500 ECU?

Unfortunately most people wouldn't have a clue how to set it up properly and would burn their engine down.
It's not a cheap alternative. Look forward to gutting your electronics and installing custom gauges. While it's all very cool, it's not a $500 fix.
There are some people running the Motec engine management system on their skis though.

even after buying gauges and everything I bet I would still be well under the $1,500 RR price tag, and have complete tuning control.
I think I'll look into this more serioursly once the warranty runs out. Then it will be bore, port, polish, cam, valves, computer, etc. I hope to get a little over 100hp per cylinder.
Now I just need to learn about prop and hull mods to help the thing handle the power and slice through the water
