    Are Athena gaskets any good?

I'm doing a top end job on a friends 99 GP800 and I'm in need of a top end gasket kit. I found a good deal on a kit from Athena (made in Italy or something) and was wondering if anyone here has used them.

My take on gaskets is very simple, I have run several different aftermarket ones in the past and most offer good one time use. The oem gaskets have yielded me multiple uses, if treated properly when installed. This means that all mating surfaces are clean and flat, and the gaskets get lightly coated with a good quality marine grease.

Bill, what type of marine grease do you use for the gaskets? Do like the copper spray?

I use Yamaha Marine grease I got from the local dealer it works well, any brand though should be good your are looking for something fairly thick. I do not like the copper spray on the OEM gaskets it makes them a one time use item. I remove my head often to inspect as I am testing and dialing in things, as I use machined oem gaskets which are expensive, I need to get as many uses as possible out of them.

I have used Athena on a few engine builds and have had no problems. Use the tightening sequence & torques supplied by Athena has they may require a different amount of crush than the OEM.
