I think his question may be related to a post I made about the 04s and 05s that drop a valve due to slight rust accumulations on the valve stem.

I don't know whether pulling the intake manifold would provide any information about the valve condition or not?

Hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in.

I've read a few different threads about dropped valves on the 04 and 05 4Tecs and the pictures showed a small amount of rust on the valve stem. I don't know if it's a salt water issue or a poor winterization issue? For some reason the problem doesn't seem as common on the 06+ engines.

Concerning your question about a visual inspection, I'm not sure? It would be interesting to hear from someone who has had this problem and learn from their experience.

    My '04 dropped a valve.

Unfortunitely the '04s are dropping the exhaust valve so pulling the intake manifold is showing you the wrong side. I did notice a little bit of rust on the intake valves, but the exhast ones (that were left) looked clean?
