    What Would you Do?

Just got a call from the shop. The 03 1300 with only 91 hours on it has a blown motor. They want $4500 to put a new motor in. Does this seem reasonable? Should I even consider that option? Should I put something new in and mod the hell out of it? Or should I sell the thing as is and buy a new ski? How much is a mint condition GPR with a blown motor worth?

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Wow get that ski out of there!!!!!! I believe a SBT crate engine is less than a grand. Without knowing more it is hard to say how much to fix it yourself but if you needed the following (Which I doubt you would need it all)

All prices estimates are for good condition 50-100 hours used pieces

    1300R Cases ($300 to $350 Shipped)
    1300R Crank ($250 to $350
    1300R Cylinders ($300 to $350 per)
    1300R Top End Kit ($350 to $450)
Misc Supplies and Parts, Seals ..... $150

    Worst Case $2350

Then you have the core value of your old parts
    1300R Cases ($100 to $150 Shipped)
    1300R Crank ($85 to $125)
    1300R Cylinders ($80 to $100 per)

    Worst Case $425

    Net Cost $1925

Value of doing it yourself and never getting screwed again...... PRICELESS

Also Unless you through a rod, cracked the case, and destroyed all three cylinders (Which I highly doubt) the bill will be much less. Just get it home and start the teardown. We are all here to help.

Thanks for the initial thoughts. I got the phone call an hour ago so my mind is still reeling. The shop wants a few hours of labor to tear it down and find out what the exact problems are, but we haven't done that yet. I would love to tear it down and try to start to sort things out myself, but there are two major issues. One is that I am not very mechanically inclined and have no experience diy (unless you count watching/helping some buddies installing a lift kit on a truck). The other, bigger issue is that I dropped the ski off at the shop on sunday afternoon on my way from wisconsin back to school in Ohio. I won't be home again until Thanksgiving. Hopefully my dad can do some legwork, but he's busy and only gets to the lake on the weekends.

Again, thanks for the responses so far and any other suggestions are welcome. Soon I should know more about the exact problems so that you guys have some more info to go off of.

well if u want to spend us$4500.. give it to one of the tuners to do a RXP conversion.

Else get ur dad to ship it to one of the tuners for repair (wfo, jim, waterwoody, etc)

There is no way I would pay $4500 to fix that 03 gpr. Hell for that price, you could pick you up another ski.
Doing it yourself is not that hard bro. Just get you a bunch of zip lock bags, put your bolts in them and mark them so you know which part they go to. There are only a few hoses and wires to remember. Its a piece of cake and some of the guys on here are more than willing to help. If you don't feel comfortable putting the motor together, send it to one of the guys on here, have them rebuild it for you and ship it back to you. Then you can install it yourself.
IT IS NOT THAT HARD TO DO!!!!! If I can do it, you can do it.
Don't waste your money on a dealership.
