    Steering cable, jet end

when reattaching the steering cable, the end with the eye (pump end) came loose from the cable itself. After removing the boot, I see that it goes inside of the sleeve on the thru-hull fitting where it mates up with the cable I guess. I can not take apart the sleeve, is there any way to fix this, or am I looking at a new cable?

Which model are you asking about?

You should check the parts diagrams, but I suspect you will find that the entire cable needs to be replaced.

Some guys have found that later model year cables were a better design, but you would need to investigate that carefully for your particular model.

You might want to check with John Zigler regarding good used cables.

95 SLT750. I have a closed down Polaris dealer around the corner from me with several ski carcases of many years. I am going to see if I can salvage a cable from one of them. Are most of the years interchangeable?

I'm still confused on what is broken? Is it the through-hull fitting that is broken?

No. After the thru-hull fitting, Once I removed the accordian boot (for lack of knowing what it is called) there is a sleeve that the threaded rod end goes into. The rod extends out of and retracts into the sleeve when turning the wheel. On the opposite end of the rod is the rod end that bolts to the jet pump outlet.

If the cable came apart, I'm guessing a new cable is in order.

Unfortunately for you, it seems that SLT steering cables are hard to find. They are longer than your normal 2 seaters which are plentiful.

It is funny, Today I found a local shell which had a steering cable. I got it, installed it and found it to be slightly shorter internally, and longer after the thru-hull fitting. I guess there is no way to make it work huh?

Any other years which are compatible?

I would have thought any SLT steering cable should work?

Did you adjust the cable at the steering end for more slack?

Turns out the problem was that the cable apparatus was too long after the thru-hull fitting. I was able to cut down the sheath, and the rod. I rethreaded the rod to attach the swivel, attached it to the pump, and I am good to go..... Quick solution that anyone with a dremel can do.

    Thanks for the help.

Good to hear. Now get out and ride....

Thanks for the follow up to your solutions. Most fix them and never give feedback.
