problems removing coupler on 97 wave venture

I am trying to remove the coupler that connects the crank to the drive shaft, so that i can replace those crank gaskets. Any words of advise? Is it reverse threaded? I am rebuilding the top end and wondering if it would be a bad idea to stick something in the crank to keep the crank from spinning. I am trying to avoid taking the front of the motor off to get to the flywheel, which is the way it tells you to do in the manual

You can try sticking some rope down the spark plug hole and slowly rotate it till it stops. Also make sure you heat up the coupler it makes it easer to remove.
