Gp reed gasket failure
This is what happens if you don’t use the oem aluminum composition reed gasket. The aftermarket plain gasket gets worked back and forth (vacuum/case compression) until it blows out in the balance slot area, This causes all of the same things you would expect from broken reeds, but you have to look closer to find it.

I am not a fan of installing gaskets "dry". I use anaerobic gasket maker 518 on both sides.
So far, no failures, except for aftermarket head gasket that I bought from boats.net. (not OE or Cometic)
That suxs Darth. Knowing you, I would say you had it up and running in less than an hour.

J-Me, Close but I matched and polished the manifold and installed stuffers. This thing has 115 # of compresson and no porting, but looks like it might bust 64mph. It went 62.6 with a 0 deg. nozzle, in the heat with this reed gasket leak.
