Starter Gear Failure
My '04 rxp was making some rattling noise especially at idle and slow speed. Checked out everything I could then took it in to dealer. They say it is a broken starter gear. Also was told that the gear is part of an expensive cluster and you must replace the whole cluster. Finally the gear that broke fell into the front cover and they are replacing the oil pump while they have the cover off. Does this sound right? Anyone else have similar problem?

Actually it would be the rear cover... and yes the broken gear could have trashed the oil pump. If would also be a good idea to have the front oil pump inspected! A new starter gear is around $40 bucks!

I think the bendix is about $250. Probably another $300 or more for labor just to get to it. Another $100 for oil, coolant, and other consumables.
Not sure why the oil it would cause a problem w/ the oil pump, wouldn't the fragments get trapped by the screen?

Big fragments would be trapped; little ones wouldn't. It's the little ones that mess up the pumps... Ron
