    Using choke to start.

Still learning about my 1996 SLT 780. Question: Do you have to open the choke to start engine? The reason for asking is I took my ski out yesterday and could not get it started. My battery gave out. Brought it home, charged battery and started. Shut down, attached hose, attempted to start again but seemed to flood out with choke? I ended op having to take the cover off to the carbs and it started but it seems like I am having trouble using the choke to start it? Thanks.

Should only need to choke a cold engine. Once it's warm, you shouldn't need it.

Getting a primer instead of the choke makes starting MUCH easier.

I'm with PastorDug, I have used my choke on both cold and hot engines and it has been hit and miss whether it will start. I am fixin to rebuilt my carbs but I am not sure if that is the prob. What exactly is a primer? Sorry for my ignorance!

All the choke does is to close the air passage down the throat of the carb. This increases the vacumn throught the fuel circuit, hence pulling the fuel into the carb.

A primer uses your hand to either draw (vacumn type)or pump (bulb type) fuel into the circuit and prime the carbs.

Primers squirt fuel into the carbs to help starting.

It also helps the starter by not having to crank so much to draw fuel through the fuel lines, to the fuel pump, and finally into the carbs.

Is the "primer" something you install? I have used fuel before to pour into a carb on a car but not sure about installing one?

The factory only supplied chokes. The primers were installed by the ski owners, or had a shop do it for them.

    Quite easy to do.
