Timing Question and ignition update question

So at the get together Randy was saying something about a way you could time the engine from the rear on at the driveshaft coupler?

Does anyone know how to do this or have you done it? Do you do the same procedure as you would from the flywheel and just do it on the coupler?

In regards to the ignition update. We also heard that if you do the update on a 96 SL 900 you have to switch the firing order or something? sounded like we work one plug at a time to find out the order and then I would assume we switch the wires around for the coils or something?

    Any help appreciated

MAG cylinder is the first one in the order, and it is the cylinder that is closest to the flywheel, so the crank index for the MAG cylinder is always correct (as long as the flywheel itself has not spun on the crank shaft).

Some 900/1050 engines are MAG-CEN-PTO, others are MAG-PTO-CEN. Either way is not a problem, you just have to make sure you get the coil primaries to match the actual mechanical firing order.

Well we put the update kit in the 96 900 this weekend and we are completely dead...no spark at all.

What could we have overlooked? Put the old CDI back in just to double check and we still had no spark with that. I have to imagine we have just hooked something up wrong, My Dad says he has went over the wires several times now though.

Followed all the instructions that came with it, but there could be something we just don't know about being this is the first update kit we have dealt with.

Make sure the wires on the connections are lined up the same. I had one where I could turn it 180 and then the wires would no longer match.
Have you verified the battery is STRONG and you have 10.6 minimum volts at the battery while cranking?
How did you work the grounds at the electrical box?
Do you have a picture of the wire locations? I've seen some guys/gals forget to take the supply power from the circuit breaker and then there is no +12 volts to the red/purple wires.

have you checked that the tether/kill switch and stop switch are functioning properly? It would be the blk/y and blk and I think they are normally closed until you pull the tether or push the stop switch.

You can not mix and match old and updated ignition CDI and stator. Old with old, new with new.

A new/update stator with an old/original CDI will not work.

    Lanyard in place?
Black/Yellow wire should not be grounded when tether is in place.

Battery power on Red/Purple wire that feeds into into the new CDI while cranking?

Is the CDI Red/Purple wire connected to the Orange terminal, or the Red/Purple terminal?

    CDI Black wire properly grounded?

When you crank, does the Brown wire out of the CDI have about 8 volts?

Not clear on what you mean here...We have the black yellow wire running to the black yellow terminal.

    Yes

Is the CDI Red/Purple wire connected to the Orange terminal, or the Red/Purple terminal?

    Red/Purple

    CDI Black wire properly grounded?

    Yes

Not Tested yet, will do as soon as possible
