    00 SLX pinging problem

My 00 SLX has been pinging pretty bad under a load. I have the 01 jetting in it and shaved heads from Sharp's. The most octane I can get at the pumps which is 93 and it still pings. What else can I do to stop this. Compression is all good and it runs great.Maybe the timing needs to be tweaked on the cdi? Any help would be great Thanks

How much compression do you have? Have you pulled the domes to see if any damage is being done to the pistons?
If race gas is not available, do you have an airport near by? You can use avgas as an alternative. Here's a good read if you can get avgas... Group K about gasolines.

The 01 jetting is most likely not the jetting you need for ur cut heads. How's the piston wash? How do the plug look? even though plugs can lie. You most likely still need bigger jets.

Also add some octane booster in your 93 to help ward off detonation.

Is this ski new to you?
Has it ever run properly with those heads?

What octane were the heads machined for?

    What is your measured compression?

What does the piston wash look like?

Any damage to the piston tops or edges?

What spark plugs are you using?

    pinging problems

I have owned the ski for 5 years the heads were cut two years ago. Never noticed the pinging before until this year. The compression is 150 across the board the heads were cut for 92 or 93 octane. I have never done a squish test or do I know how. I have never checked the timing either. It runs great. I have not yet checked the piston wash. The plugs are NGK BR9ES. Except for the 2001 jetting and the heads the machine is all stock. If someone could tell me how to check the timing and and how to do the squish test. Thanks

Does it sound like it might be steel to steel.Maybe a bearing going bad. If you've never had a problem then I doubt the timing has changed,or there a squich problem,If sharps did the head for 90's octaine, then they are done right.

If it's a bearing, you should be able to tell by grounding one spark wire at a time. And load it, the knock will go away on the bad cyl. Just don't run to long and load the exhaust up with too much fuel.

I will keep checking things out. Maybe my carbs are getting a little dirty or are due for a rebuild. Thanks for your help.

    pinging problem

You know I was just thinking I did lock this up once. I was adjusting the low speeds and removed an oil line to do so and forgot to plug it back on and seized the middle cylinder. Maybe that could have thrown the crankshaft out of index. Maybe time for a tear down? But it still runs good just shakes a bit and pings. Maybe I just need a dose of airplane fuel . Thanks for all your help on here you guys really know your stuff.
