Question GP1200R Top speed and fuel issue

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have recently purchased a 2000 GP1200R and I took it out for the first time last weekend. On land when hooked to the hose it reved up fine and the PV opened like they should but when I put it in the water it did not want to go over 47. If you keep it wide open for about a minute you can feel the PV open and it will read 67. Also I didnt have it out too long (an hour at the most) because it wasnt running right and it drank a whole tank of gas while my friend has a 2001 and his gas gauge only lost about 2 bars. The guy who I bought it from said he recently re did the carbs and the ski only has 21 hours on it. It does have a D-Plate. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks. Kevin.

    Welcome to the Hulk..

How do the spark plugs look?

Do the carbs have Tee handles and flame arrestors installed?

How does the jet pump look? Impeller and wear ring?

    How is the piston wash??

    Any other Mods??

    Pics are always good..

Sounds like you may have one or more sticking needle/seat assemblies, i.e. sluggish low end and high fuel consumption. Just because the prior owner says he rebuilt the carbs doesn't mean he did, and certainly doesn't mean he knows how to.

May want to pull them off and inspect them or send them out, in addition to what homo^^^ suggested.

Thanks. It is still stock other then the D-Plate. He had the wrong plugs in it so I put the right ones in it and it sounded alittle better on land havnt been able to put it in the water since i did that (hoping thats all it was). The impeller and all don't look bad for being a 2000. I am going to try to get it in the water this weekend and see if it runs any better. Could the plugs be making it use that much gas? I will get pics up as soon as I can. Thanks.

Yeah thats what I was thinking he just said he did. He does work in the service department of this power sports store which made me think he might of actually done that. But I was going to send them out this off season anyways just to be sure. Thanks

Well if he works in a service department then I would say he never did the carbs. He would know what is involved in removing them

take your time and inspect all fuel lines as well and check 2 see if you smell any pungent fuel. The factory spark plugs will be NGKBR8ES and make sure to verify your gap.

I think it's BR8ES-11, unless 2000 GPR's had different plugs for some reason.

sounds like some burned reeds too. A ski that old is bound to have a few issues, not just one.
