Having problems installing UMI steering. Please see pics inside.

The hood hits the handlebars and rubs. I do not know what to do to resolve this but its obviously a major issue. I could file the opening back a bit more to move the bars back but then the holes will not line up. Any ideas? It also appears that even if it didnt rub, the hood will not open unless the bars are turned at a specific angle which is also a big pain in the ass.

i can help you out (KINDA)

#1 this steering kit was orginally designed for a gsx or gsx-l. On the gsxl you do not use the button covers, but it still looks like there is a major gap between the buttons.... so make some kind of spacer to push the buttons into the switch housing?

#2 once again, this was designed to work on the gsx-l so i remember reading a while back on here that you need to use the bar riser to gain the clearance needed to make the hood shut?

#3 finally this was designed to work on the gsx-l so the plate/thingy you are holding is designed to hold the mode/set buttons on a gsxl and bolts to the underside of the bar clamp...

hope this helps, I was all hyped up to put this steering setup off my gsxl onto my rxp, but was reading about all these issues, and it seems that using the rxp-x steering is the way to go with way less issues!

    eh...

that rxp-x steering will cost a fortune to put together unless you know someone parting out an X boat and those are few and far between.

The button covers work just fine. Remove them from the stock bezel and install them into the UMI piece.
(just push them out with your thumb and then press them in place on the UMI piece)

Just take the two allen head screws out of the UMI piece, insert button covers and then simply install the UMI piece back over the buttons.

The buttons themselves fit just fine. It's a tight fit... it's supposed to be. That's what holds them in place.

The bars will have to be straight for you to be able to open the hood.

even when they are straight, the hood hits them and rubs

No they are not. They are the same size and shape. Push them out of your stock bezel with your thumb and press them into the UMI piece. They fit perfectly!

They are all the same size/shape for all year RXP's. Only the X models have a round start/stop button cover but the actual button behind it is the same.

You will still have to have the bars relatively straight to open/close the hood.
