Found something inside the front cover (XPL)

I heard a noise and pulled the front cover off my 98 XPL,
I was expecting to find a broken tooth from starter or bendix.
but instead could 3 pieces of metal that looks like some type of clip?

any idea??? maybe its from the internals of the bendix?
