"Operating system not found" WTF?
Need geek help.
Something weird happened to my hard drive, or the pc, not sure which or why, but need to find out so I don't go through a hair pulling with myself again.
About two days ago, nothing else in the studio was affected, but my computer blacked out and rebooted. Usually I can see the blue screen of death, but not that time.
And then yesterday my computer crawled. Had a Java update in Mozilla Firefox that I think caused this painfully slow thing to start. So disconnected the plug-ins to find 'some' relief.
That didn't work so well and I decided to go into task mgr. and started shutting down unnecessary processes running in the background.
That didn't work. Computer kind of went limp on me so I did it, I pushed the infamous RED button.
Have done this many many many times before, but this time when loading it stated:
"Operating system not found"
So after trying a few times, same error script came up.
So went out and got a new hard drive this morning, loaded a fresh O/S onto it, and when it rebooted, same thing.
"Operating system not found" WTF?
Time and time again. (insanity)
The main is IDE and is setup as master, the others are all sata, so all the little stuff was already taken care of.
Even put in a new 550 watt power supply, in the event that it may have been that.
However after complete frustration, I just kept cycling the startup a few more last times for no good reason as I stared at the monitor in complete dismay with some dumb hope, and there it was, Windows XP loading right before my eyes.
(I immediately began unstrapping the TNT from my chest and so glad now that I did)
Can't figure it out??
How I could go from "Operating system not found" on the old and on a brand new drive and then all of a sudden it was there.
Pooter was shut down fully. Even had it outside and cleaned it with the garden hose. Sorry, I mean air compressor.
I'm totally baffled. I've done my share of Frankensteining over the years and most of the guts are usually safely spilling out from the pooter (and not the problem) I didn't do any hard core labotomizing in the registry, or even tinker with the bios.
So I'm asking for help so I can prevent it from happening again.

That was awesome advice.
Now I have heard there is something to clone a drive with the O/S in tact, but know nothing about it.
Is this possible, to have a backup drive to throw in and keep on going?
If so, can you offer suggestion?
And many thanks for the help!

I have never cloned a drive, but I do know, you will prolly need to make one a 'master' and one a 'slave', also, I'm sure BIOS settings may need to be configured so there are no conflicts. I would also assume cloning would be nice as it would be like having two computers....prolly have to select which one you want on start up.
I have a machine with Linux and Windows, the windows machine has a smaller partion.
On my MAC, I run dual backup harddrives. One 500GB Lacie harddrive for iTunes(movies and songs) and a 1TB for the MAC and Lacie
