    1996 SPX Blowing 5A

This is the same previously posted 96 spx htat was "taking" on water". Have replaced all grey fuel lines, filter, feul selector, 7.5A, VTS motor and housing. Left the VTS unconnected so that "isn't in play". Rode it across the lake and all of a sudden "NOTHING"..dead in the water.

Took MPEM out and checked fuses, the 5A was blown. Replaced it and the same thing happened. Replaced it again, disconnected all gauges and it started and ran for 30 seconds and then "poof" another 5A gone!

Where shoud I start and where is the "stator"? Sorry new to this stuff.

    5 amp fuse keeps poping

I have the same problem with my 96 xp. I was told it could be the stator got wet or had metal shavings on it from the starter/fly weel wear. Also was told a bad vts motor could have been the problem. Im waiting on my new/used/good mpem and cdi. I have no idea why I am trying to do it myself. We need some good feedback

I had the same problem with a 98 GSX I used to own. Your VTS module is most likely bad.

ok when you say "module" do you mean the electric motor it self ?? or the other portion of the vts?

The wiring is completely different on 98's and it's a 7.5 amp fuse. The 96's are located in the rear black box. Has nothing to do with the 5 amp blowing...

BTW I disconnected the VTS, gauges and other unnecessary connections, replaced the 5A, the ski will fire and run for 5-10 seconds the blow the 5A again. When the gauges were connected it was giving me a red battery light and then blowing the 5A. So rectifier first or is there another thing I need to do to eliminate the stator as faulty also. IF one goes does the other automatically? Another stupid question where is the rectifier? Thanks!

Its on the front of the motor right behind the battery. you have to remove the front cover to access it. there are about 10, 10mm bolts holding it on.

No, the rectifier is in the gray box.
