    Polaris 97 780 porpoising help!

    Hello,

I recently bought a 97 polaris SL 780 and have taken it out the last few weekends. At first i took it to a lake late in the evening where the water was almost like glass. I was able to get the ski up to 52mph with no porpoising at all. The previous weekend i took it out to another lake that had rougher water. At about 30mph the jet ski will continue to porpoise over and over again. With two people on it is almost unbearable to even drive. I don't have a lot of money to spend on parts right now but i was wondering what should be my first part to buy to help with this problem. A lot of people recommend new grates while others say plates help the most. I am new to all of this so i appreciate any information that could help me out. Also the trim was all the way down when driving. This helped some with one person but not with two.

    Thanks for your time,
    Matt

that will work , but wait for other to chime in. i have not used that plate, so i do not know its effect.

Install: 6 bolts and some sealant. take about 30Min.

Slide the ski back on the trailer and use the front winch cable to hold the nose. you can do it laying on the ground

I can't speak for the SL but I just put an OP rideplate on my SLTX and I could hardly believe the difference in overall handling!

Install is easy...PITA getting the stock plate off, the sealant acts like a 7th bolt.

    Welcome to the Hulk.

Unfortunately the SL hull doesn't like rough water too much. It does have a tendancy to porpoise. Adding another rider makes it much worse. It's just the nature of the beast. It does however, make it one of the most fun skis to ride though. Donuts and wave jumping are a couple of it's more fun attributes.

That Ocean Pro (Ocean) ride plate is very good for porpoising. It will knock a couple MPH off top speed though. But if you're riding in rough water, you'll never get to top speed either, so it's a wash.

Now the Ocean Pro (Race) ride plate is a bit shorter, but will also reduce porpoisig without losing any top speed.

A SLX 780 ride plate will also do the same as a OP (R) plate.

Stock style sponsons will help reduce porpoising a good amount as well.

A R&D aquavane intake grate will also help a little, but not too much.

That would be the order for the most dramatic results.
