98 XPL runs on trailer not in water

Hey guys got a 98 XPL that runs fine on the hose but soon as i put a load on the motor its no good falls flat on its ass, a friend with a yamaha 1300 had the same issue and it was a broken pedal on his reeds, should this be where i am looking at or is there some other issue??? Comp is fine over 150psi a hole, and new fuel lines, clean carbs, all the normal maint. stuff is done.

Normally a broken reed also makes them hard to start but not always. It also does not show up on a compression test (saw this on a DI, comp was fine but the power was way down in the water=broken reed).

If you listen by the carbs while it is running on the hose you may hear the blow-back near the carbs. You could on that DI.

If that is not it you may have missed something in the fuel system (did you clean the fuel valve too?) and it is not getting enough gas.

What are your carb adjuster screw settings?

In fact, think on the fuel system first as it is not that often that you break a reed unless someone tried to start it with water in the engine.

On the new fuel lines it does not hurt to double check they are installed correct,, I have hooked lines up wrong in a hurry or tired before.

When did it start doing this?? Or What led up to it running this way?

On Edit,, what fuel is in it? age of fuel? octane? premixed?

i filled the motor with water, so i was hearing blow back and thought it was a back fire, so i will pull the carbs and check the reeds.

    Yep, probably a broken reed.

While you have the carbs off fog the living crap out of it.

But, they do not react well to being flooded with water so I wish you luck.

+1 for the reed petals. I had one go and it did the same thing, ran great on the trailer but not under load.

you need to fog that motor,,

when ever you get water in a motor you need to make priority of running the motor, building up heat and getting it dry and lubricated inside.

RUST happens very fast on bearing surfaces

the motor sat for a month with water in it, got it all out and put mavell mystery oil in the cyl for 2 days then pumped it out and now fixed the reed and it has now run over 12 hours hard as hell wave jumping and racing no problems.
