Thread: Exhaust question

6 months ago I installed a Riva catch-can with a 4" Kana front air,
the can hasnt caught anything yet, it remains perfectly dry and empty.
Lately the engine has developed excessive blow-by, the smoke smell when riding is getting a bit annoying.
I thought first I was spraying too much lube, so I stopped using WD40 for a couple of weeks, but still got as much smoke and smell.
While flushing the ski on the hose I noticed thick white smoke getting out of the catch can filter, and also from under the braided hose where the J-pipe meets the exhaust manifold.
Is it normal that exhaust fumes be pushed out of the can trough the filter?
Please advise how I can fix this

The bellows on you J Pipe might be getting shot. Send a pm to Danny about it. That would account for the smoke there. On the catch can i have seen some smoke come out of mine. I believe its normal. Is the catch can filling up?

Nope, it isnt catching anything, not a drop of oil in 6 months, just releasing smoke in the hull...

Those Riva catch cans are garbage they don't stop enough of the oil vapor from escaping. I've seen skis pass compression and leak down tests and just blow like a freight train from there. I had the honor of riding Justin (rxpblast)'s rxp a few weeks ago and the catch can just coated everything in a film of oil. Smoke coming from your exhaust doesn't sound good at all.

It's very odd that you don't get any fluid at all in your catch can..
If the oil is over filled i can see where you might get too much extra fluid to where it would cause a mess.

take your J pipe out and inspect it. See if you see any burn marks or the metal mesh on it separating You might have a hole on you bellows. Or simpler than that, put the ski on a water hose, start it as if your are flusghing it and try to feel for any leaks around the exhaust area before taking anything off.
