    FXHO top end?

350 hrs on 05 engine - developed low compression on #1 cylinder-added some oil in cylinder-and compression came up ! {rings}.
I put in some "oil conditioner" and gas additive- pulled plug and cleaned with "liquidwrench"--wd-40--
Got ring freed up -compression back- and ran a tank of gas out and ran normal- all good.

Then -because of darkness and being caught away from dock- ran wot for about 20 minutes-- problem redeveloped.

Thinking I need to pull cyinder and put in new rings.

    ??
How big of a project am I getting into?
Replace all piston rings- or just the one?
    Valve job?
Anything else I "must" replace to have a dependable engine again.

Use as a "touring" ride- mostly long cruising.
    Needs to be dependable

    Thanks

not many, if any guys here have these ski's, let alone work on them. I would assume that if you do rings, you should also hone the bores and do a valve job while your in there. What does the service manual recommend?

Sorry, I thought there were a lot of FXHO's out there- before the SHO's came along.

there are tons of those ski's out there, but this is a performance forum, and those skis are not exactly performance oriented. you may have better luck at pwctoday, just be ready to deal with a bunch of jackass posters and useless bickering.

my recommendation is to get a factory service manual and see what yamaha recommends. then let your wallet be your guide.

did it ingest any water? was it winterized correctly or sitting for along time? whats the compression readings? these skis don't break to often and there a little more involved to rebuild, 350hr is not alot for a 4stroke, I hear rental companies getting 600hr when they get rid of them without any engine problems, if it were mine ill get a manual, take head off and check for a bent valve or rust on the valve seat causing a leaking valve seat, that should be easy to check

    Thanks for all the input.

I think it is a ring problem because putting drops of oil in cylinder brings compression completely back up to and past- other cylinders.
    Never sat up-long-
Never been turned over- no water--

    will try pwc today

    anyone else?

I would ask a bike shop wasn't that engine in the motorcycle line?

I have a 07 FXHO at the shop right now with very low compression on number 1 took it apart and the cylinder is all scored up pretty bad. I have not taken the piston out because the cylinders is so bad but i think a ring broke and took the cylinder out.
