    Silencer removal

Didn't find any threads in the Polaris forums sooooo. Has anyone removed their exhaust silencer? Any benefit to it? I have a '96 SL900 and just looking for some little things (freebies) to do for it. Looks like it would come out easy and lose some weight as well. Any pros/cons for removal?

not a good idea the water will back up and fill your motor if you turn it off or it dies out

Removing the water box will provide no performance gains to speak of, and a huge increase in noise.

Even the aftermarket water boxes are more noise than results.

A well running SL900 is a fairly fast machine in stock form.

What maximum sustained RPM are you seeing at WOT?

    What is your cylinder compression?

Just recently purchased it after it sat for a few years. After checking everything out, cruised it on the river, I don't know the exact RPM, but it was in the 6's. Just not sure how high. It does run WELL. I did notice that the throttle blades don't open all the way vertical. Have yet to check if the cable had slack, or if thats how they're set. Have yet to check compression.

You really need to pull the carbs off and rebuild them before riding any more.

If it has been sitting for several years, then you really want to clean those carbs, and probably replace the fuel hoses, and clean out the fuel system overall.

It doesn't take long for a clogged carb to burn down a piston.

A slightly lean running engine (because the carbs etc are not 100%) will still produce lots of power, but at the very same time those pistons are being overheated
