I think I broke my external HD
Hey guys. I was transferring data from my computer to my external HD and I was forced to restart my computer while it was doing that. Now when I try plug it in, nothing happens, and one time it popped up saying the USB port was unrecognizable. Did I just destroy my external HD? Anyone know what I can do?

have a look at its status in disk manger using the computer management interface.
you may need to restart again....although I doubt the data is corrupted but if it is there are ways to get it off with a little patience.
let me know how you go/.

I restarted my computer a couple times thinking that might help...

no its not destroyed by any means.
you can probably just reformat it using windows or any other software of your choice. All data on the external hdd will be lost.

well thats kinda the thing. I would rather not have to get rid of 400 GB of stuff haha. Not to mention I just put about 40 gigs of movies on it And how am I supposed to reformat the HD if nothing pops up when I put the usb in?

you might be SOL, it is probably all corrupted.
If you could get the computer to recgonize it you'd be able to salvage the hdd. is it usb only or does it have a sata option also? you could try that.
I'll post back if i have more ideas....

listen to see if the disk is actually spinning
sometimes "sticktion" will keep a disk from spinning up, in that event it becomes unrecognizable.
pm me your phone number and a good time to call if you want this issue resolved. Take 15 minutes max to figure out what's up with it.
drives are cheap enough, but lost data is a pain, especially if it has <shhh wink wink> things on it that can no longer be replaced

well the <shhh wink wink> can easily be replaced
What im really worried about is that I was gonna reformat my computer this weekend so I was backing stuff up...so apparently I won't be doing that this weekend. And a lot of my songs I was backing up and now there saying that the original file cant be found, even though they are still on this computer too, so I guess I could just delete then move them into iTunes again...but thats a pain in the ass.
