Is octane the deciding factor in my Yamaha vs. Sea-doo purchase debate?

I am currently looking at a new 09 GTX or a Yamaha FX HO. The specs on the two are very similar, I've found a GTX for about $1000 less than my best price on the FX HO. However, here is my dilemna: our marina only carries 87 octane fuel. The Yamaha's are operated on 87 octane, while the Sea-doo's are 91. I am not about to have a stash of jerry cans at the cabin to fuel up with. I would rather just pull up to the pump and put in the 87. Now, I'm posting this in the Sea-doo forum to get your guy's opinions: can I run the GTX on only 87 octane? If not, I will be off to the Yamaha dealer!!!

What motor does the gtx have 155hp or 215hp... you really should ride both to see witch one you like better then decide if its worth the hassel of getting premium fuel if you like the gtx better. For me the chioce was easy cause i wanted a 2 seater so i had no choice but toget an RXP. It takes 91+ and sometime its a pain toget fuel but i think the added power is worth it.

what are you looking for in a pwc? If its performance go with the gtx. also look at the rxt as it pretty much the same as the gtx.

in 2009 seadoo put on all there skis that its ok to run 87 but they prefer 91, i have run 89 in my ski plenty of times with no problem, also remember that most gas on the water does not have ethanol in it.

87 will be fine just wont have the tiny performance edge of the 91.

If you have a modded boat then you wana be making sure you have good fuel but in stock form you will be just fine. R88

That is good to know. Either one of these units will be plenty fast for me. I will mostly be using it to pull the kids on the tube.

If you planning on pulling the kids, then the 215 is def. the way to go. Also, off topic, but: I just found out recently that I've been burning 91 w/ethanol in my '06 215HP RXTs. This has been over a 3 yr. period and has been no prob. the same gas for 75% of the time. I've had no performance issues, but my machines are bone stock except for washers.

    GTX 215....
if you're talking about the new one with brakes, you're getting a much safer machine for your family too, especially if you're new to the sport...
