    What happened to my battery?!

ok... So I was winterizing my P-X with the help of a couple of friends and something rather disturbing was discovered... I noticed one of the caps for the battery was completly destroyed and I have NO clue why!

My machine has about 23 hours on it and the battery looked like it was mounted properly with no slack. It looked solid! The threads were ripped apart and there appears to be some damage to two of the heads. My question is, how can something like that happen? I've taken some pictures... I need to get a new battery for next spring now... Guess I don't need to invest in a battery maintainer this year!

WOW, did you notice anything loose rolling around inside your hull like a bolt or something? Looks like something hit it with force, perhaps when you were wave jumping.

That's really weird, b/c when one of my '06 RXTs had about 15 to 20 hrs. the exact same thing happened. My remedy: I went to the hardware store and bought a cork, for about 20 cents, and plugged it up. That has been over 3 years ago and I now have about 125 hrs. No problems.

I didn't notice anything rolling around inside... the cap is so lightweight, doubt it'd make much of a sound... I just was lucky to notice it before something really bad happened. I found the cap wedged between the hull and the gas tank.

83gator: There is a large plastic bracket that holds the battery in place... I wonder if that's what caused the damage. Is it possible that jumping a wake can cause that much force to rip it off? Did you wedge the cork between the bracket and the battery? That seems like a good idea. I'll have to do that for next season!

The dealer probably overfilled the battery when they installed it, had the same thing happen on my 06 RXT.

I don't do a lot of wake jumping all tho I've had a few rough water rides. I don't know what happened. I was just nosing around one day, prob. checking the oil and I notice the damn cap was off/broken. [WTF? How does that happen?] A light bulb went off and said to just plug it up. So thats what I did. I don't know if it'w wedged between the holding strap. Next time I'm in there I'll check.

Could that be considered a warranty item then?

Well hopefully you can figure out what happened, so it won't happen again.

I just bought a back up battery off ebay. Guy took my offer of $40.00 plus shipping. Only thing is it comes dry, but I got some acid from a local store for $3. Great to have a spare on hand.
