Question 97 and 98 gp1200 ride plate differences

I have both a 97 and a 98 gp1200. Both have the stock ride plates and they are identical. Both measure 10.5 inches long. I keep on reading that the 97 is supposed to have a longer ride plate. What's up?

My 97 has the long plate. But it is 12 years and 3 owners old. So it is hard to tell what it came with.
