    Lesson to be learned.

    I thought I would share this story with all of you regarding the importance of having a good battery in your ski. I know this has been discussed before but hear me out. My son found on Craigslist, a 1999 Polaris SLX1050 ski for sale with an asking price $500. The listing stated that the ski had an “issue”. So we make the call and the person tells us that it won’t start because it has no spark. He stated that he had taken it to a dealership and they told him that they needed to pull the engine in order to repair it. Ok, my first thought is that the stator has gone bad and it needs the update kit installed. It’s a common problem but not to bad of a job if you do the work yourself and if the price of the ski is right. So we decide to go take a look at it. When we get there, the electrical box is open and I notice that the CDI part number is the correct one used in the update kit. Hmmmmm, could this ski already be updated and the new stator has gone bad? Maybe or maybe not. In any event, I ground all of the spark plug leads, remove the old battery, install the good battery that we brought with us and proceed to do a compression check. Dead on 123 psi on all cylinders. Not too bad. The ski is in great condition, ready to drop in the water and even came with a cover so we make him an offer and it’s ours. We get it home and the first thing we decide to do is check for spark. Guess what, it’s there and enough to knock you on your behind. We reinstall the new spark plugs that came with the ski, turn on the gas, hit the start button and it fires right up and purrrrs like a kitten.

    I guess the moral of the story is obvious, just because your battery turns the engine over doesn’t mean it’s good and don’t trust the dealership mechanics because they might know less than you do.

    Maybe we should make it a rule around here;

    If you have a Polaris with no spark or weak spark, you may not post about it until after you have installed a new battery.

    Definitely a top ten frequent cause of trouble - a weak/marginal battery that the owner thinks is 'good enough'.

    If you made him a offer less then $500.00,you got a great,great steal.

    Another lesson there. Do just like you did, Check compression,but don't try and start it in front of the seller. If you had,he'd keep it or jacked the price.

    That is amazing! I need a deal like that on a PRO 785 in my area!

    But honestly, I have never seen a 785 in my area....so that's not likely to happen.

    (Yes, my dream machine is a PRO 785, if everyone hasn't noticed yet)

    I'd be all over the 1200 at that price.Sounds like it needs a stator.
