Thread: Piston wash

I saw the post about looking at the piston wash with a pen light, what do i need to be looking for?
Any writen down explanation to look at?

I know this sounds wierd but...
If its lean it will be black all over (not good)
If its rich it will be clean all over (rather run rich than lean)
If its black with some clean spots around ports your on the money

the wash is the fuel pattern in to combustion chamber & exhaust If you have no carbon build up your too rich,or if there is excesive carbon build up thats usually too lean! plug chops will also help you read your engine.

This about perfect for you to see an example of each.
Top left pic: LEAN
Almost no clean or "washed" spots.
Top right pic: RICH
Too much clean piston. Excessive fuel will wash away any carbon build up.
Bottom pic: PERFECT
All black piston with fingernail sized "wash" spots near the intake ports.
