Cool 1996.5 After 30minutes will only do 3500rpm whats wrong

I purchased a 1996.5 (1997 guts I guess) seadoo gtx with 28 hours on it about 8 months ago. It id not run b/c it needed a new computer so I purchased 1 on ebay for 100 bucks. I put the computer in, had the key programed at riva and the ski went 55mph without any problems for about 1 month, then it started the problem. It would be running fine and then it would heat up after 30 minutes and then it would only go 3500rpms rather than the 6800 it normally did!!! I just joined the forum. Also I found that after I unhooked the ground on the battery and let the ski sit for a night it would work fine again for about 30 minutes. Please help

Smile These are what I have done and what questions I have

Trim spark plug wires(have spare bracket for coil)
Move ground wire from starter to rear of block.- Do you pull the engine out.
Replace fuel lines(TSC in Canada has what you need cheap)
    Replace internal carb filters
Clean front fuel filter. Make sure O-Ring is not stretched(done)
Clean Rave Valves(replace o-rings and gaskets)
Update rave bellows if necessary(red is old, green is new style)(whats this)
Inspect and replace VTS boot(if applicable), replace metal clamp with zip tie.
Inspect and replace O-Rings in drain plugs
Make sure there is no water in rear electrical box
Check small wire going to ground on battery, replace connector if necessary.(this is what I did, but I don't know if it works all that great.)
Buy a spare rectifier, you will need it and probably the day the dealer is closed.(what is this)
Make sure the spare fuses are in the proper places.
Grease drive shaft.(umm please tell me how)

I have experienced this problem a couple of times over the years on Seadoos with the 785 engine.

The ground cable is connected to the starter. You do not have to remove the engine, but removing the plastic cover on the carbs will let you see and get your hands in there.

To test if the rectifier is the problem, make sure you have a fully charged battery. Disconnect the red wire on the rectifier in the front electrical box. If your problem disappears, replace the rectifier. Don't ride too long with the rectifier disconnected as your battery won't be charging.

    Rectifier

Can you send me a picture of the wires I need to disconect or unplug, because I really think it is a electrical problem. You are on top of it man.

In the front gray box, you will find a 2"x2" square box with one red wire and three yellow ones. You can't miss it. When replacing a rectifier, don't worry about mixing up the yellow wires. As long as they are all connected, you are good.

Before you do this, you should trim your spark plug wires and replace your spark plugs to make sure these less expensive items aren't the problem.

A bad voltage reg/rect will act like a rev limiter....

And a 97 GTX will only run around 6800 rpm not 8000.
