'95 SLX - fix and upgrade
OK Iím about to start tearing into the SLX, and boy howdy do I have questions.
Iím looking to have a craft that is above all reliable, if itís not running the wife and kids, and nieces and in-lawsÖ(well you get the point) are not happy. Itís currently mostly not running. Doesnít want to start (has primer kit), doesnít want to do full throttle, looks like reeds maybe bad and Iím sure the carbs need a rebuild. I would also like to add some performance without too much expense, top end is nice but I want more hook-up. Iíve already added the R&D Shortwing intake grate and got a second set of sponsons to try CrazyAís mod.
First the fixes:
Replace reeds (stock or otherwise)
Check fuel system, new line all around
Repair replace fuel shutoff valve (works but stiff, knob stripped)
Open heads to check out cylinders/pistons
New gaskets around all items I remove
Fogging Kit (maybe)
Possible upgrades Iím considering:
Change to í96 SLX impeller (Skat 3 blade 15-20, #5131371)
Stator (maybe)(how does it help?)
So now Iím looking for input on what makes sense to meet my goals. What will give me improvements without causing me to spiral out of control into the money-spending vortex of crazy modding I see here daily. Keep in mind that while I have some general mechanical knowledge and have wrenched a few bolts, this is my first experience with PWCís and 2-strokes bigger than a lawnmower. Generally what I want is some small improvements for an older ski that I know is never going to be a Matrix.

Impeller and reeds are a good start. I would add an Ocean Pro rideplate to the list.

If your pump has never been rebuilt, meaning new bearings and seals now is the time to upgrade to the skat-trak 6 vein stator. Hook up is improved, so is the top-end. It's bullet proof compared to the stocker which is good if you are not the only user of the machine.

What's your schedule at home going to be in the next week?...maybe I can quick stop by and give ya some input from what I can actually see. I can also get 10% off all parts I order from a local dealer and get the parts in two to three days. Let me know...PM sent.
P.S. Happy Birthday!

So I got together with JetskiMN to confirm the Compression numbers I got. PTO 120, Center 50, Mag 15, Uh oh I was really hoping it was my inexperience with a cheap compression tester, but it wasn't. We didn't see any obvious damage through the plug holes but we'll see what it looks like with the heads off. Engine ran pretty well for the few seconds I let it run, right after I got those numbers. I've never noticed any noises that seemed like something was coming apart in the engine. I did see some flame in the Mag carb so I assume my reeds need some help. I'll keep updating this as I get the engine apart. Any suggestions are welcome, except get an SBT replacement engine.

Sorry to hear that.
First, pull the engine and post some pix of the guts. If you need a crank, it's going to be expensive. . .

I decided to start by just pulling the heads off to see what I had. The Center and PTO heads looked good. My next step I guess is to remove the carbs and intake then the exhaust and the cylinders and see whats up down below.

I hope your botom end is OK.
I'm sure I have heads and cylinders for sale if you need them. I don't know about pistons though. I'll look around.
Also I have a 14-19 prop and a 16-21. I possibly have a dry pipe off a 650 too.

Got the exhaust off and turned the trailer around in the garage to work on the Intake side. Two things, anyone got simple plans for a rolling stand the trailer a pain (In the shin) and what size are the carb bolts that I can't see.
