    Piston Meltdown.

My num 1 piston came apart and my cyl walls have minor scaring, question can it be honed to use a stock piston or will it have to be bored, dont want to replace all pistons if i dont have to. this is on a 1999 1200 motor. Thanks.

some of the guys that actuall know there stuff will chip in but how bads the scaring, how many hours on the motor, and if its scratched to bad you cant bore them out to much, our cylinders have a nikasil coating that has to be replated when being bored over, usually about $250 a cylinder from what ive seen..if you say a piston came apart you might want to split the case and make shure theres nothing in the bottom end that could cause damage down the road, then you might as well put new crank seals, etc..

Pictures would help make an opinion. Usually the aluminum can be removed carefully with muratic acid. Light hone after that. Might need carb maint to prevent this from happening again.

cylinder may chip on you but you can try to gt the most out of it. Mine chip on me last summer but put a new piston in to see if it would work and ran strong till winter then I sent it off.
