Head Gasket: How many hours and cost to replace?

Shop is telling me I'm loosing coolant and after pressure testing and looking for leaks want to replace the head gasket. Whats the going rate for this? I cant get to it for while so guess I have to trust them?? They are also telling me head gaskets normally go after 100hrs??? Not in my experience.

    Anything CAN & will happen.
But to answer your ?? about the service interval
    of a head gasket,
NO. That is not Normal. 100 hours, no way. Unless
you are pushing a lot more boost & or rpms/mods.

I have 235 hrs on my GTX SC and it is faster/stronger than
    when new.. Slightly modded.

My RXT has a little over 100 hrs on it with quite a bit more boost.
I'd be Pissed if it blew a head gasket.

Just remember, breakdown are directly correlated to how you take
care of the boat. Oil and coolant changes, how hard you ride,
And if you are one of those guys that "Hits" it right off the dock/trailer.

It's just like an automotive engine. You want to warm it up easy
before you are at WOT/ high load. Everything needs to expand
to operating temps. Even when its 100* out.

Nah, I've always had good luck and am very meticulous about maintenance, never punched a cold motor, which leads me to my question. I'm a 1000 miles away and just had them pick it up to correct something minor they missed so cant see it. I just dont need to be paying anyones winter downtime. How many hours should they be charging me? I'm looking at the better part of $700 for this.

I have done a few x headgaskets now
If theyu charge you more than 8 hours they are ripping you.
The cost is down to gasket, headbolts, rocker bolts etc which need doing.
If you plan to keep it I would get a block guard from the gh online store and get it fitted at the same time.

    Jason..

Add Coolant, Oil, filter and consumables to that list and a skim of the head to do a 1st class job......you would agree eh Jason.

    I'd say $700 is fair

That's about what I would charge + materials and other assorted "gotta do this while it's out"

of course you find somebody that has no liability insurnace and no overhead and it's a afternoon job over a 6 pack and a nice dinner after the fact. Of course that's assuming you don't drop something down the timing chain cover of course.

Thanks guys. I'd do it but it's not at home. I was just a little miffed that I put a bunch of money into mods with assurance that I wouldn't loose reliability and I never noticed anything wrong and of course didn't look at the coolant bottle when I flushed it and only rode two days on it.
