    Interesting Engine Damage

I purchased a non running 2005 RXT last week with a bad engine. Figured it was a dropped valve or supercharger failure. The supercharger was fine, so I pulled the engine. Head, valves, and pistons ok. Allot of metal in the PTO cover though. When I split the case, I noticed a spun rod bearing closest to the PTO. The main bearing closest to that rod was also shot. The block had damage( as seen in the pictures below) as if the crank was being forced toward the front of the ski. Interestingly enough, when I pulled the driveshaft, the plastic clip in the PTO was crushed. The previous owner had installed a new impeller. If he forced the pump back on and crushed this clip, could it have put enough pressure on the crank to cause this failure?

If the previous owner installed a new impeller and did not tighten it properly it can loosten up under quick decel and when it loostens it forces the shaft into the engine and the pressure from that will cause similar damage.

I have not checked that yet, although the impeller did not seem loose when I removed the pump.

I would'nt expect it to still be totaly loose if the ski was ran in the water after that. It could have tightened back up some.

Makes sense as that would create much more force on the crank than overtightening the pump.

I have an engine that failed in this same way Thrust washer failure. Have a crank I bought for a mock up motor as well, it also has thrust washer damage. I would love to know what would cause this type of failure...

i have also had 2 motor faliures due to thrust washer faliure. One block was so bad there was no thrust washer at all and the crank was a throw away. Impeller was tight both times.

Yes, If the engine is too far back it will cause that.
