first ride of the season PROBLEMS

so i took my 900 zxi out for the first time this year. let it warm up for a second then ran great! i could use advice on how to use trim (haha) as i was slapping against flat water for half the ride but other than that great. after about 10 minutes i lost pretty much all power. it would only rev to about 4000 rpms and couldn't even plane out. it just got worse after i let it sit a couple minutes it could barely go. checked the plugs and they seem fine but i'll probably replace them anyways. my dad thinks it's fuel (dealer sold it to me with half a tank and they said they stabilized but who knows) so i'm gonna run some seafoam through it but i don't know what else to do. i've never done anything more to a motor than switch spark plugs and change oil so i think i might just take it in

before you do anything else, check compression, and get a small flash light, look into the plug holes while each piston is all the way down. You need to check piston wash to see if you are getting fuel.

You could have a vacuum valve on the gas tank stuck that would cause your issue, or you are not getting enough fuel.

I would drain all the old fuel and put it in your car with a fresh fill up

Get new fuel and check compression and wash

changed spark plugs, seafoamed the gas, and took it out again today. no luck still same problem. took the new plugs out and 1 and 2 were chocolate brown but 3 was light gray with brown ring on the inside. checked compression with probably a 20-30 year old compression tester and i hope to god it was wrong. 90-90-85. not sure what to look for when you say piston wash, can you explain further?

    at least its not 90-90-30

low compression would drop top end and power if they are that equal. something else is going on

well it sounds like i tested the compression wrong because i did not hold the throttle or the choke nor did i ground the spark plug wires. i'm gonna cyphen the gas out tomorrow and give it a full fresh tank with seafoam. it'll be warm out so if i pass a proper compression test i'll take it out on the water and see what it does.

These things are fairly forgiving, until they are not.

get a small flexible flashlight at ACE hardware (they end cap them or have them in the $4 tool section)

Check your wash, before you try to run it

couldn't tell much from the wash but i tested the compression again and my tester was accurate. turns out it's not firing on cylinder 3. has spark, and it's not oily, and the plug smells like gas. i have no idea what's wrong.

try removing the boot, trimming back the plug wire 1/4" and reattaching the boot.
