    If the carbs have been worked on, perhaps something wasn't done right.

    There should be a pulse hose from the crank case to the carb, which powers the carb fuel pump. Make sure it is connected to the correct nipple on the carb.

    Also make sure the fuel in and return hoses are in the correct places on the carbs, not swapped.

    would you happen to have a schematic of hose routing

    Have a look at the parts diagrams on the Polaris Industries web site.

    Shown is the 1997 SL900 carburetor diagram.
    Item 45 is the fuel pump attached to the carb, and you can see the nipples on the fuel pump;
    Pulse line (vacuum) from the crankcase,
    fuel in from the fuel filter and fuel selector knob,
    and fuel return directly to the fuel tank return fitting.

    BTW, make sure the fuel lines are attached to the correct fittings on the fuel tank. If the fuel hoses have been changed, make sure tank vent nipple goes to the vent, tank Return nipple goes to the return line from the carbs, etc.

    These Keihin carb diagrams might also be helpful.
