    Bad Reed??

    My wifes 95 750 SLT has always been kind of doggy and hard to start. I had the airbox with the black rubber boot on the end. There was always lots of oil/gas splattered around the boot.

    Today I switched to the K&N style air box. Now I can remove the top and watch the carbs. The PTO cylinder is throwing constant splatter of raw gas back up through the carb. That spark plug is also wet and black. Compression is 115 PTO 120 Center 115 Mag.

    Would a bad reed allow crankcase pressure to bleed back up through the carb and splatter all over??? The gas splattering then drips back down and floods the PTO cylinder making it hard to start.

    It looks like the PTO cylinder may have more than just a weak reed.

    Did you hold the throttle wide open when checking compression, with all spark plugs removed?

    A healthy engine has less than 10% difference in compression across all cylinders. Your numbers show a 30% difference

    A bad reed might affect compression readings, but you need to investigate further.

    Have a look at the links below for more info

    Well then, maybe the PTO cylinder is OK

    It seems like removing the carb rack and pulling the PTO reed is the next step.

    While you have the carbs off, now might be a good time to clean them internally.

    Have a look at the Fuji engine link for more things to consider;
