Newbie Questions on Polaris w/ Requested List!

    As requested...
So...I'm a prev boat owner, never owned a Ski. I've found a 1997 Polaris SLT 780 which owner states has never been ran in Salt Water, runs well, just needs a battery which I have to bring to him to test, and possibly new plugs. (PS what plugs do these use, possibly a service manual link?) Is there anything specific I should look for upon start? Is there anyway to detect major issues? I've got owner talked down to 600 dollars but want to know if it's going to be worth it as a 1st Ski? Are these units problematic? Constant Maintenance? Future issues that are not worth tackling? I've seen many posts on these Skis and is that because they constantly break down, or just due to 13 years old? Sorry for the abrubt borage of questioning, but I'd like to act on it quickly if it's worth it.

Take a fully charged battery with you for testing.

NGK BPR8ES is the ONLY plug you should run in this ski.

Be certain to put a reverse flush kit on the water rail if you are going to run salt water.

    compression numbers? unk
Go to an auto parts store or tool store and get a compression gauge. Pinpoint accuracy of the gauge is not vital. With the fully charged battery remove all spark plugs (DO NOT engage the lanyard). Put the gauge in the MAG cylinder (Front), hold the throttle wide open, then hit the start button for about 5 seconds. Next do this to the CEN and PTO cylinders. If it reads somewhere around 120 PSI and the cylinders are within 5% to 10% of each other you're in good shape.

Okay, if you have a full compliment of tools and you're accustomed to following a technical manual you can tackle this. The Clymer manual is pretty decent and the remaining tidbits can be covered by folks here.
The SLT hull is a nice stable platform and rides very nice. You're not going to do a bunch of spin outs and really tear it up, but they are a good ski to start with. The 780 is not a power monster but is very reliable and will zoom around pretty well.

With a 13 year old ski, the first thing to do is replace all fuel lines and oil lines. You might also want to run through the carbs and make sure all is good there.
