Stock Flame Arrestor Mod and Carb Settings

I have a 96 gsx and was going to mod my stock flame arrestor by taking a dremel and carefully cutting away the sides just enough to where the lip of the top will still hang over a little bit but open up the stock restrictive box to breathe a lot better. I was curious as to if this would require me to re-tune my carbs or if stock would be fine?

    Thanks!

I've never tried what your doing, but I have just taken the top off the factory box and ran just the base mount with the F/a and actually lost some RPM and MPH. Its worth it to get true F/A and jet it correctly.

I would think just cutting some plastic away would be fine since the factory jetting is a little rich anyways. It does depend on your altitude too.

You would lose rpm and mph due to the motor now running lean!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The motor wasn't running lean. The plugs actually looked more chocolate than dark brown almost black with the factory box. And it was only 30 rpm if I remember correctly. The factory jets are rich to run everywhere in the country.

Thanks for the replies! I guess i'll look into buying an aftermarket flame arrestor. Any good recommendations for a 96 gsx? Also, any good sites to buy them off of?

    Thanks

He wasn't running lean. He kept the flame arrestor screen on it. No more air was intrduced than if the top cover was on it. I suspect something else caused you 30 rpm loss. Like a heat-soaked engine. The first wot pass always yields the best numbers. After that, you do lose 20-30 rpm.

I prefer Fly Flame arrestors, available @ PPG.

does anyone know if i can expect decent results out of an aftermarket flame arrestor on a 96 gsx 787? Will atleast add 1 or maybe 1.5 mph to my top speed? I have put aftermarket intakes on other things before and about all its good for is making it sound louder.
