    Kawasaki Won't Go

I just rebuilt a 2001 Kawasaki STS 900. I had the carbs apart and cleaned them. Did not see anything unusual. It will rev to 4250 and 20 MPH. That is it. What is odd is the RPMS always go to 4250 even at 10 MPH and never go above that. Is there some type of limiter like The Sea Doos has a learning key. It runs and starts good, but not over 4250 RPM.

This is my first Kawasaki. All I have done so far is replace the plugs. They all looked fine. Any ideas.

    John

    John,

Do you see any ability to cruise at less than 3000 RPM and get going at all? or does it go straight to 4500

are there any warning lights flashing?

No learning key that I know of. Does it run smoothly? What is the compression? Feel the cylinders and see if any of them are cooler than the others. If so, that cylinder probably isn't firing.

It will run at any speed up to 4250 RPM. It just won't go any higher.

It does run smoothly. The cylinders are all about the same temperature. I actually pulled one plug wire at a time and it reved to about 3600 with any one of the wires off. So I think they are all firing. I have not checked the compression yet. I really do not think compression is the problem unless they are all low. It runs the same 3600 RPM with any one plug wire off.

I just checked the compression. It is 120 in all 3 cylinders.

One other thing. When I bought this thing in pieces it had BR8ES Plugs in it. I think the correct plugs are BR9ES. This is what I installed. From what I understand the BR8ES are the next heat range hotter. Could I try BR8ES Plugs? Could this be causing my problem?

I had a problem like this one time. Mine wouldn't rev very high at all. The connector between I guess the exhaust pipe and muffler broke. For some reason it wouldn't rev but to about 4000 rpms when that happened.

    Update:

I tried the carbs from a 1100zxi that I had. I ran a lot better. I know it will not run right because of the different jets. It will now run 5200 RPM and 33 mph. I am now thinking that the original fuel pump may be bad.

    Any thoughts, John
