As you said, people have done it both ways. I broke mine in by the book and have had no issues. Others have done the same. However, you also see people say to "ride it like you stole it" on your first time out, and they say they have no issues.
To each their own...

I'd do it by the book
I broke my '07 250X in by the book. I have 130hrs on it with absolutely no problems like you hear about around here. No GIO issue, no spark plug issues, etc.
Not saying that people who have problems broke them in hard or that I have not had problems because I broke it in by the book. Just telling you what my experience is.
I have only GPSed my ski once (and I had a passenger riding on it at the time) but it rode 66.5mph bone stock with 1 bar of gas in chop which is in line with what I have heard from others so I don't think it hurt the performance to do the recommended break-in.
PS: I see this topic asked every month or so, people need to start using the search button or we need a sticky .

i have heard both, when my 15f is finished, it will get a good tune on it and then a flogging... As far as compairing skis, there are soo many factors about overall speed i breakin would be the last thing i would say
just my opinion though

I had a new '07 Seadoo RXT and I broke it in by the book. Zero issues before I traded it for a motorcycle. My Kawa 250x original owner claims he broke it in by the book and we've both had zero issues. I think the recommendations are there for a reason otherwise why waste the time and ink??? Good luck.
