Follow the wires from the battery to the starter or vice versa. Check all the connections, grounds, etc. Check the wires in the dash/hull - and the button could be bad.

If it's hanging up but trying, could be the bendix.

    Goodluck!

bolts are behind the cover facing the block, you can get to it without removing the motor, but the exhaust might be in the way,i did mine when my exhaust was off,if you can get your hand in there you should be able to feel the bolts, the bolts will not be facing the cover,it bolts to the block but is right behind the cover.

2 12 mm bolts 1 has the battery ground going to it.
reach under the exhaust and behind the starter you will find the bolts in the side of the c/case.

thanks for the help. but i did a little more investigating as im learning as i go, the bendix just slides off with the front cover off, the starter is not loose, i slid the bendix off and then tried cranking the starter where it again was binding, so the issue is the starter itself not bendix, can i change out the starter with motor in place?
