    Used Purchase Help

    Hey Guys,

I have a friend who is considering getting into the PWC game. He's looking at a 2002 SD GTI LE (2 stroke, right?). Comes w/the trailer, 2 vest, cover, extinguisher... No hour gauge available (as per my friend) but it is reported to have under 50 hrs. He is reporting the bike to be very clean except for 1 small seat tear. No pix yet.

He was told by the owner it will run close to 60MPH, I told him that prob. meant in the low 50s (just guessing) and he was fine w/that as it is to be used mainly by his teenage girls.

He can pick it up for $3,000. He plans to test drive it this weekend.

If it runs good/clean is this a good & or/fair price? I have no knowledge about the smokers so I'm relying on the GH community. Thanks for any relevant replies...

check the compression. on both the holes while its cold and remember to check it a WOT
if its a 951 I believe the compression should be around 135

also tell your buddy to check the wear ring to impeller clearance.

    and if its a 787 around 150.

sounds like a high price to me $2200 is where he would want to be. you have to remember that the ski is 8 years old... and a 2 stroke...

Be careful with anything the owner tells you before you get there, especially things that cannot be easily verified. There is no hour meter on that model (I don't think) but every time I've looked a used ski that was either "slightly damaged", or "low hours", "excellent condition", etc. that description was far from accurate.

I honestly dont think a 2 smoke is the best idea for a teenage girl or boy that doesnt know a few basics, I believe a 4 stroke will be more reliable for her, and peace of mind for your friend.

    Maybe a 185 Naturally Aspirated

its a 951 2 stroke...to check the hours you need to take it to the dealer and hook it up to the programmer and they can verify the hours off the MPEM.
as for the price you can look it up on kelly blue book and make your assumptions from there. on the contrary to Ultra's comment I think that a two stroke three seater is a fine machine for a first time rider. its large enough not to tip over, its got a motor easy to work on and relatively cheap to replace if needed to be. your probly looking at speeds around 50ish.
    good luck

    Thanks, Guys!

I have relayed your posts to my friend. I told him, IMHO, the price needs to come down if, in fact, it's running up to specs. At least he will be an informed buyer.

Hats off to the GH Community You guys rock.

(I will check back in case there are any last minute buying tips...)

No No No. The 2002 GTI LE is a 720 (85HP). It tops out at less than the speed of smell.

Not a good buy at any price.

-I bet it's good on gas.

In that case a 720 will be more reliable and
