Why would it be a dumb idea?

If it makes it easier to re-board in deep water, why not install a boarding step?

Make sure it is firmly mounted to the hull.

eBay is one source, or you can go directly to the manufacturer - Aqua Performance

From experience.........if you get a ladder (super idea) I'd suggest NOT just screwing it to the hull with the screws that come with it.

Cut away the foam(inside the hull), use stainless steel backing plates and stainless steel bolts, lock washers and nuts and proper adhesive/sealant to install.

The ladder(step) on my SL750 departed while underway ...never to be found again.

    aqua performance sells the plates

You can also use the expanding Sloted Body Rivet-Nut inserts that splay out on the back side when installed. They spread the load over a much larger area than the inserts that simply swell up slightly in and behind the hole.
