gps ram mount on FZR (pics)
Bought a ram mount and backing plate from gpscity.com and put it all together today. The backing plate (aluminum) is held in place by 3M 5200 as well as the stock bolts. It is extremely secure and I have zero worries about it coming off. In the pic of the back of the glove box lid, you can see that I had to grind down some of the ribbing so the backing plate fit flush. The gps unit is placed so that it does not interfere with the steering and the glove box can open completely without hitting the handle bars. The gps is a garmin venture HC and the RAM cradle/ backing plate cost a total of 12$.... and its made in America . Let me know if you have any questions.

Great post Mike. Nice to see what others are using. Don't forget a tether.
How do you like your GPS? I need to get one and can't make my mind up what to get.

Regarding the tether- I will use one my first time out wave jumping just as a precaution but I really don't see it coming off. Assuming all goes well, I will run it without a tether after that. 5200 and two bolts should do the trick
I know a lot of people use that garmin 76 because it floats but it is also twice the size of my venture HC.
The only thing I don't like about the placement of the gps on the glove box is that you have to look down to see it. If you have aftermarket bars I would recommend mounting the gps to them instead of the glove box. I had my old forerunner on the glove box as well so I am used to looking down to see it so its not a big deal for me but it takes a little getting used to.
I actually purchased a new glove box cover and that foam backing directly from yamaha so I can always switch back and forth as needed. If you go this same route, be careful because you can easily break part 19 when removing it. It simply clips in place but I broke one clip while removing it so it is hot glued in place for now . I'm not worried about it coming out though, just one clip holds it in pretty well.

Good info Mike!
Have posted my set up before.....but not recently.
235 hours of use with my Garmin 276c on 07 FXHO......unit is still working perfectly, although I have had to replace the chart cartridge once...probably due to water intrusion...it has been submarined a few times

I saw your post a while ago when looking for ideas for a gps. You sure do have a really nice setup Too much fabrication for me though. I'm hoping my new Venture HC doesn't have any water intrusion problems like some of the older garmin units...... to be honest, I put tossed it in a pool to find out So far so good!!

Here's how I mounted my old Forerunner 201. I used velcro and it held fine.

Just a quick update- went out the other day on the lake and had zero problems. Didn't run a tether or anything. This mount is bullet proof!! I have full confidence that the gps will stay in place.
