I searched but couldnt find a answer? would a inline fuel filter work to replace the oil filter on a 98 gti? or are they different?

Most aftermarket fuel filters you can buy at the local auto parts store use a paper media filter.
The oil system is in enough trouble as it is if you get water in there and to add a paper element filter that would turn into a clogged mass of goo is asking for trouble.
This is not even considering the possible, and likely, differences in the flow rate of the media in question.
IMO, get the OE filter from SD and sleep well at night.
