    Post 2000 XL1200 Ltd. Rebuild

I am trying to get an idea of the parts needed and possible outlay of a complete rebuild for my ski. I siezed #3 last year and this is a project I will have to tackle eventually.

I am looking for suggestions, tips, hints, and parts / part #'s people recommend using when they completed a rebuild of this nature.

Goal / Purpose of the ski: I don't plan on racing, this is a rec ski I want to keep around for a while and just keep it running. The less maintenence the better. I use the ski year round or at least try to.

I am not looking for crazy power.

I am looking for my options, i.e. motor swaps, parts swaps etc. to build a bullet proof motor that will last.

Have you determined what actually needs to be rebuilt? Just #3, or the whole thing? You rebuilding the carbs? The pump? Need a lot more info.

    You ask and shall receive...

The ski is 10 years old, nothing has been really worked on since:
    - WaveEater Clips and PowerValve Couplers.
    Sezied #3 May 2009. Compression 120, 118, 112:
    - Converted to Premix (Dominator 40:1)
    - R&D Intake Grate, D-Plate & Sensor, FXHO Nozzle
    Ski still runs 58 mph

    Getting ready for Memorial Weekend:
    - WFO is rebuilding my carbs
    - WFO installing Primer Kit and removing Choke
    - Riva Free Flow Exhaust
    - Possibly driveline hose upgrade

    Future Upgrades:
    - Rule 500gph Auto
    - R&D Pump Shoe Seal Kit
    - R&D Ride Plate
    - Solas 13/19 Impeller

My whole purpose is to figure out which pieces ya'll recommend rebuilding and which you recommend leaving alone. If it ain't broke, don't fix it...kind of mantra?

I figure if I am in there rebuilding #3, why not do all of them. It was also mentioned to do the crank to.

    Hey bro,
    OK, if you are wanting a solid ski, you have got the right one for it. I haven't been messing with my skis much the past few years, but here are my thoughts;

    First things after the rebuild:
    Pump seal kit
A D-plate and chip, chunk the caddy.
New prop; a 12/18 Solas works great, you can post a message in the sales section and see what people have out there that they are trying to get rid of. Sometimes you find a great prop for you cheap.
Ride plate. R&D or Riva, minor differences. When you have the money, get Jim in Tampa to cut it for you, makes a HUGE difference. In fact, contact him and see if he has anything laying around. Island Racing does a great cut from what I hear too.
Jetworks mod; really helps on the hole shot.
Look around for a true and welded crank, if you are replacing the crank anyway.
    Consider going pre-mix.

Have one of the gurus here mill the head... you can do that in the future. Keep an eye out for someone selling ported cylinders in the future, if you are willing to wait you can get a great deal sometimes. V-Force reed kits give awesome low and mid-range power.

If you don't get carried away going for super-high compression, the motor will be almost bulletproof if you put it together right and take care of it, and you will have a beast of of a ski. GroupK has some interesting reading here.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions Smitty. I pretty much have the ideas on the upgrades, but I am more intuned, or narrowing on the motor itself. Of actually the rebuilding of it and what components I might need to concentrate on.

Why not just have Rich take care of all this? Is your ski in his shop? I was there last night and would have liked to take a peek at it.

Nope, no peaking! Haha just kidding. Yeah he's got it, but she still runs. She runs pretty decent for what she had been through. It is an expensive task I can't tackle right now. But I am trying to plan for the future.

Yeah Rich could do it, but how would I ever learn? I am pretty mechanicly inclined and I enjoy working on cars, motorcycles and jetskis. Its my hobby. I like seeing how things work. I installed the D-plate myself and removed the head myself.

Now the smaller stuff I have no idea how to do, i.e. carbs and tunig I will leave to the experts. --> WFO
