Big 12 Doomed?
There is a lot of talk flying around about league expansion in college football.
The Big 10 wants to expand, the Pac 10 is thinking about expanding.
The SEC says it will expand again if the Big 10 does. One common denominator in all this expansion talk is the teams that are being looked at
as candidates to go to the Big 10 and Pac 10 are from the Big 12.
Mizzo and Nebraska to the Big 10. Colorado to the Pac 10. If that happens, will Texas stay in the Big 12? Probably not. Word is if the SEC expands again, (because of the Big 10 expanding) it will try and get Texas and Texas A&M to come to the SEC. Another common denominator in all this expansion talk is money. And lots of it. Every Big 10 program gets about 22 million a year from the Big 10 TV network. The SEC teams get around 17 million per year from CBS and ESPN contracts. Big 12 teams get about 7-12 million a year. That's a huge difference and these days in college football, money talks. If the dominos start falling and the Big 12 gets several of it's top teams poached by other conferances.....
Will it survive or will it go the way of the Southwest conferance?

The dominos have started falling......
Colorado accepted an invitation to join the Pac 10.
It looks like Nebraska is going to the Big 10.
If Texas and Oklahoma leave, the Big 12 is dead.
Texas is meeting next week to decide what to do or where to go.
Oklahoma has said this week that it will follow Texas if they leave the Big12. I don't think Texas will stay in the Big 12 because with Colorado and Nebraska leaving, the Big 12 will not be able to hold a league championship game. NCAA rules state that you have to have at least 12 teams to be able to hold a league championship game. The Big 12 may be able to add 2 teams to replace Nebraska and Colorado but no big name school is available and who would want to join the Big 12 with 2 teams already leaving and probably more big teams on their way out?
The Pac 10 wants several other Big 12 teams to join and form a 16 team super conferance. I don't think the SEC will sit by and let the Pac 10 get the cream of the Big 12 south. If Texas and Oklahoma were to join the SEC (along with 2 big time teams from the ACC) you would by far have the Biggest baddest conferance in the country. The key to the rest of the story is what will Texas do? I guess we'll find out soon enough.
