'96 Polaris SLX 780 Runs but wont shut off, other...

Hi, I just bought a 96 Polaris SLX 780 and it starts right up and runs fine but it wont shut off from the kill switch i have to pull the plugs to get it to turn off. Also my guages dont work and my trim wont work and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what might the problem be. I used the search and couldnt find much, but i am new to this forum thing. Another thing is when i lift the front hood up i see 2 sets of wires running up to the fuel tank i think but one set is cut and taped off and I am not sure what these do. (PS. The fuel injection is disabled, running mixed) Any help is much appreciated, Thanks.

    Welcome to the Hulk.

DO NOT remove the spark plug boots. You may damage the CDI.

Choke the engine, or prime it until it floods out instead.

Start with the connections inside the elec box for the kill switch.

Check the fuse for the MFD gauge inside the elec box too. Only replace it with a 1/4 amp fuse. You can get them from Radio Shack.

Trim motor may be froze (rusted). They do tend to come back to lifr if you free it up. You will have to remove it though in order to do so.

The wires going to the fuel tank are the fuel gauge.

A pic would really be better to see to confirm.

    No problem.

The circuit board is color coded. Just make sure the board is clean and corrosion free, then double check all wires are on the correct terminals.

Take your time and you'll be fine.

It's written right on the 785 engine.

Do not attempt to remove any elec parts when starting or when engine is running.

The CDI is trying to send a spark to the plugs. If the plugs are not there, the voltage is going to spike and try and find the path of least resistance.

I think the domestics have a grounding terminal to put the plug boots on to prevent this from occuring.

ok this makes sense, thank you for explaining this. i was curious as to why.

i always wondered what that was there for... i do not have one on both of my 1050s but i have seen them on a 1200 and my buddys 93 xp.

YAY!! I fixed it, turns out the previous owner had the yellow(i believe) wire in the wrong spot in the cdi and now she turns off with the lanyard. Thanks guys for the help!
