Thread: prop/ring clearance
05-23-2010, 07:53 AM #1
Here's mine with a coupla different props...
14/19 had .006 around 80%-90% inside the wear ring...less in the rest.
15/20 had .004 around 80%-90% inside the wear ring...less in the rest.
Now, when I say 80-90%...it means that I can't get my gauge to run the entire circumference of the ring....the clearance is tighter in certain areas.
Is this normal?

Kinda tight cause according to my 08 shop manual it's supposed to be between 0.009'' to 0.014'', my guess is it will wear dorn the first time you will start it and set itself to what it needs.

oh no.....these props have been run already...the 14/19 for over a year.

I cant find thread on clearance info, as i was looking for it.
I thought I read where if more then .008 need to rebuild prop if running SS linear.
Can someone confirm what is correct?

As long you dont have cavitation you'r ok.
To much clearance gives cavitation, the Solas props are somewhat bigger then the stock prop.
They shave the wearring a little to set itself.

True, but the ss linear wears the prop instead of the ring so just specing out my props.
As you know with alot of power many things can cause cavitation, so not real easy to just say is from clearance.
I'm seen it posted somewhere what the avg clearance is know when the prop needs to be refurbished.

Somebody knows, (I know Jerry know' s along with impros and others)
What is Max clearance between prop and ss linear before the prop needs to be rebuilt, due to performance loss,
I can't find the threads were Jerry or others posted Max clearance.
I keep thinking is
.008 and if is that or more need rebuild.
For what I remember the Max clearance reccommended is less then what y'all have posted out of the manual.
I checked 3 props and they run from. .0045-.006
Thanks if any has the link or knowledge.

I prbably shouldnt say anything cause im not really sure but i was reading something about this somewhere not so long back when i stuffed my prop and was told the best fit was size for size because it cuts down cavitation . more clearance more cavitation . This guy fitted it slightly tight and the prop rotation beaded itself in . I have yet to try it .Food for thought

Got the info I needed.
.010 is the limit.
Anything more is time to refurbish prop.
